ISIS Device

Overview

'Device Name' specifies which ISIS-compatible scanner will be used for image acquisition. The value must exactly match the name reported by the scanner's ISIS driver.

Usage

• Select the desired device from the drop-down list in the property grid. This list is populated with all ISIS devices currently detected on the system.
• If no devices are listed, verify that the ISIS driver is installed and the scanner is connected and powered on.
• The selected device determines which hardware is initialized and controlled during scanning operations.

Best Practices

• Always ensure the correct device is selected before starting a scan to avoid connection errors.
• If the scanner is replaced or reinstalled, re-select the appropriate device name to match the new hardware or driver.
• Use descriptive device names in your system to make selection easier, especially in environments with multiple scanners.

The 'Scan Area' property defines the rectangular area on each page that will be captured by the Capture Device.

• Configure this property to match the size and position of your documents within the scanner.
• Units can be specified in inches, points, millimeters, centimeters, or as a percentage of the page size (<in>, <pt>, <mm>, <cm>, <%>).
• Limiting the scan area can improve performance and reduce file size by excluding blank margins or irrelevant regions.
• The default value is typically the full page area, but can be adjusted for custom document sizes or to avoid scanning artifacts at the edges.

'Scan Ahead' controls whether the scanner buffers pages in memory as they are scanned. When enabled, the scanner can operate at its full rated speed, continuously feeding pages without waiting for the application to process, display, or save each image.

Usage

• Enable 'Scan Ahead' to maximize scanning throughput, especially for high-speed or batch scanning scenarios.
• When 'Scan Ahead' is enabled, use the 'Scan Ahead Maximum Images' property to limit the number of pages buffered in memory. A value of 0 allows unlimited buffering, subject to system memory constraints.
• Disabling 'Scan Ahead' causes the scanner to pause after each page until the application is ready, which may reduce scanning speed but can help manage memory usage.

• Use 'Scan Ahead' for large or multi-page jobs where performance is critical.
• If you experience memory issues or need to control resource usage, set an appropriate limit using 'Scan Ahead Maximum Images'.

'Scan Ahead Maximum Images' determines how many pages the scanner will buffer in memory while scanning when 'Scan Ahead' is enabled. This allows the scanner to continue operating at full speed, even if the application is still processing previously acquired images.

• Set this property to a positive integer to limit the number of pages buffered in memory. For example, a value of 10 will allow up to 10 pages to be scanned ahead before the scanner pauses to wait for the application.
• Set this property to 0 to allow unlimited scan-ahead, subject to available system memory and scanner capabilities.
• This property is only relevant when 'Scan Ahead' is enabled. If 'Scan Ahead' is disabled, this setting has no effect.

Best Practices

• Use a moderate value to balance scanning speed and memory usage. Higher values can improve throughput but may increase memory consumption.
• If you encounter memory limitations or want to avoid excessive buffering, set an appropriate maximum.
