Image Compression Grooper

Configures JPEG compression settings for saving continuous tone images in Grooper.

Remarks

The JPEG compression class provides options for saving color and grayscale images using the JPEG format, which is widely supported and offers a good balance between image quality and file size for photographic or continuous tone images.

How It Works

JPEG compression is lossy, meaning that some image data is discarded to achieve smaller file sizes. The degree of compression and resulting image quality are controlled by the 'Quality' property. Additional options such as 'Smoothing', 'Progressive', and 'DCT Mode' allow further tuning of the compression process.

JPEG is best suited for photographs, scanned documents, and other images where subtle color gradations are important and some loss of detail is acceptable. It is not recommended for images with sharp edges, text, or line art, as compression artifacts may become visible.

Configuration Guidance

  • Adjust 'Quality' to balance file size and image fidelity. Higher values preserve more detail but result in larger files.
  • Use 'Smoothing' to reduce noise or minor artifacts in the image.
  • Enable 'Progressive' to allow images to display gradually as they are loaded in compatible viewers.
  • Select the appropriate 'DCT Mode' for your performance and quality requirements.
