JPEG 2000

Image Compression Grooper.IP

Configures JPEG 2000 compression settings for saving continuous tone images in Grooper.

Remarks

The JPEG 2000 compression class provides advanced options for saving color and grayscale images using the JPEG 2000 format, which offers superior image quality per byte compared to standard JPEG, and supports both lossy and lossless compression.

How It Works

JPEG 2000 compression can be configured to target a specific quality level, a specific compression ratio, or to use lossless compression. The class exposes properties for controlling the number of resolution levels, compression mode, quality, ratio, and progression order. JPEG 2000 is especially useful for archival, high-fidelity imaging, or scenarios where precise control over compression is required.

  • Use 'By Quality' mode to specify a target quality percentage.
  • Use 'By Ratio' mode to specify a target compression ratio (e.g., 20:1).
  • Use 'Lossless' mode for exact reproduction of the original image.

JPEG 2000 compression is generally slower than standard JPEG, but provides more flexibility and better quality at high compression levels. It is supported by many imaging applications, but may not be as universally compatible as JPEG or PNG.

Configuration Guidance

  • Set 'Resolution Count' to control the number of resolution levels encoded in the image (useful for multi-resolution viewing).
  • Choose the appropriate 'Mode' for your use case: quality-based, ratio-based, or lossless.
  • Adjust 'Quality' or 'Ratio' as needed, depending on the selected mode.
  • Set 'Progression' to control the order in which image data is stored and decoded.

For best results, test your settings with representative images and verify compatibility with downstream systems.
