Auto QA

IP Command Grooper.IP

Automatically flags images which meet certain criteria, such as being too dark, too light, or too busy.

Remarks

The Auto QA command analyzes images to automatically flag those that may require human review due to quality issues. This is especially useful in document capture workflows to identify pages that are underexposed, overexposed, blank, or excessively noisy ("busy").

The command evaluates two key metrics:

  • Intensity: Measures the overall brightness of the image, normalized from 0 (black) to 1 (white).
  • Entropy: Measures the amount of visual information or "busyness" in the image, normalized from 0 (completely uniform) to 1 (maximal variation).

Images are flagged for review if their intensity or entropy falls outside the configured minimum and maximum thresholds. This allows you to catch a variety of quality issues, such as:

  • Pages that are too dark (underexposed or covered)
  • Pages that are too light (overexposed or blank)
  • Pages that are too empty (blank or nearly blank)
  • Pages that are too busy (excessive noise, background, or artifacts)

How It Works

  1. The image is converted to grayscale for analysis.
  2. Intensity and entropy are measured.
  3. If either metric is outside the configured range, the image is flagged and a reason is provided.

Supported Pixel Formats

  • All common pixel formats are supported as input. Images are automatically converted to grayscale for analysis.

Diagnostics

When diagnostic mode is enabled, Auto QA logs the measured intensity and entropy values, as well as the reason for any flag. This helps you tune thresholds for your document set.

Classification Features

The command produces two features for each image:

  • Intensity: A value between 0 and 1 representing average brightness.
  • Entropy: A value between 0 and 1 representing image complexity.

These features can be used for reporting, workflow branching, or further automated analysis.

Configuration Guidance

  • Adjust 'Minimum Intensity' and 'Maximum Intensity' to catch images that are too dark or too light.
  • Adjust 'Minimum Entropy' and 'Maximum Entropy' to catch images that are too empty or too busy.
  • Use diagnostic output to review flagged images and refine your thresholds.

For most workflows, start with the default values and adjust based on the types of quality issues you encounter in your documents.
